West Coast – Tinie Versveld Wildflower Reserve
About the Birding
Tinie Versveld is located next to the R315 between the towns of Darling and Yzerfontein (-33.3336, 18.2727). It can be easily included after a day trip to the West Coast National Park. Birding is done from a series of sandy trials that spread out from the entrance gate. The reserve is best known for the local race of Cloud Cisticola, with darkly streaked markings. These birds are easily heard throughout the reserve performing their distinctive aerial displays high up in the sky.
About the Birding Site
Tienie Versveld is a lovely island of Renosterveld preserved amongst the cultivated farmland. Its seasonally waterlogged fields attract a wide range of farmland specials as well as being host to many endemic flower species. The reserve is particularly active in spring when many birds are breeding among the flowers. A short walk around the reserve could take anywhere from 30 min to an hour.
