Tomjachu Bush Retreat
About the Accommodation
Tomjachu is an exclusive, family-owned private nature reserve set in 500 hectares of game fenced mountain bushveld, located within the Crocodile Valley Nature Conservancy, just 20 minutes outside Nelspruit. Whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, with family, friends, or your loved one, Tomjachu offers something for everyone.
About the Birding
On over 20 kilometres of trails, tracks and roads you can hike amongst the abundant plains game through mountains and valleys, searching for some of the 275 bird species currently listed. Our wide variety of habitats on the reserve – from grassland savannah, thorny thickets, rocky outcrops to riverine forest – create homes for a wonderfully diverse array of flora and fauna. With no dangerous game on the property, guests can roam freely and safely whilst on the lookout for specials like the Crowned Eagle, Narina Trogon, Retz’s helmet-shrike and many more. Our soon-to-be completed bird hide at Tom’s dam will also offer guests wonderful photographic opportunities on the water.
Our proximity to other birding sites such as Kaapsehoop Blue Swallow Reserve, Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon offers guests the opportunity to do day trips to look for species which can’t be found at Tomjachu.
Other Activities
Guests can enjoy lots of activities such as a guided nature drive or walk, dinner in the bush, star gazing evenings, and open-air picnics at one of our many lookouts spots. We also offer Specialist Bird walks with local birding guide Ben Coley.
