Tour Operator – Shipwreck Hiking and Canoe Trails
More about the tour operator:
NYALA VALLEY GAME RESERVE and SHIPWRECK HIKING & CANOE TRAILS are situated close to the coastal town of Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, halfway between East London & Port Elizabeth.
Nyala Valley is a treasure-chest of birds, animals, trees, river and Eastern Cape landscape.
There are different areas for birding, such as grassland, and valley thicket. There are pools with good birding spots along the river bank, and riverine forest areas. There have been sightings of the elusive and beautiful Narina Trogon, and rare African Finfoot along the river bank, with five different Kingfishers. Nyala Valley has recorded 164 different bird sightings and a birding list can be supplied if guests would like to keep a record.
Guests have the opportunity to book a guided walk with an accredited FGASA Bird Guide, or just enjoy self-guided walks for a few days birding and relaxing.
Guests may also book a Beginner’s Birding Course.
Guests may hire three double canoes for a few hours, to paddle on the Kleinemonde West River. Fish Eagles can be seen and heard flying overhead and many aquatic birds along the river. Whilst birding you may also come across some of Nyala Valley’s game such as Zebra, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Nyala, Wildebeest, Impala, Kudu, Common Duiker, Blue Duiker, Bushbuck, Red Hartebeest, Warthog and Vervet monkeys. Lucky guests have also spotted the very shy Cape Clawless Otter near the top of the Kleinemonde West River.
Birders can overnight at Simplicity, our comfortable thatched lodge, which is self-catering and can accommodate 8 guests. Bed linen and towels are provided, along with braai-wood.
Guests can also stay at Lily Pad hut, our rustic bamboo hikers’ accommodation, overlooking the upper narrow section of the Kleinemonde West River, for up to 24 hikers in 2 dormitories with bunk beds, (bring own food, drinks, utensils, towels, bedding/sleeping bags). The river flows after good rain and the narrow section can be seen from the deck. Wood is provided for the braai and for the donkey-boiler for hot outdoor showers. There are open-air long-drop toilets.
Guests must bring all their own food and drinks as there are NO shopping facilities close by.
Nyala Valley offers an unforgettable birding experience.
