About the Birding
Recognised as one of the more elusive fynbos endemics, the Protea Canary is common throughout Potkook. It is often seen away from protea stands, conspicuous by its distinctive song, and is known to drink at drinking spots and features near the accommodation. Another tricky fynbos endemic, Cape Siskin, is common in its preferred open, rocky fynbos habitat. The males’ white-tipped wings and tail are good field characteristics, as is their typical tri-syllabic flight call. Abundant and conspicuous, the endemic Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird are eminently approachable, although numbers fluctuate with protea and tubular erica (heath) flowering periods, respectively. Found in the rocky areas throughout Potkook, the Ground Woodpecker is often first located by its harsh, far-carrying calls but is commonly seen in small groups throughout the region. The locally nomadic, Freckled Nightjar has been recorded from rocky outcrops and boulders in Potkook and from the wider mountain area, and at least one pair of Verreaux’s Eagle is resident in the surrounding cliffs.
Key species:
