North-east Venda – Gundani Mutsiwa
About the Birding
Gundani Mutsiwa boasts the only patch of miombo woodland in South Africa, dominated by trees of the genus Brachystegia. The woodland is accessible along the Thohoyandou and Masisi road near the village of Gundani. Park your car at the Gundani Mutsiwa campsite and walk through the Msasa forest towards the river. Bird activity is generally quite low but target mixed-species foraging flocks that are frequented by the White-breasted Cuckooshrike and Southern Hyliota. Other notable species to be seen include the Pink-throated and Green Twinspots, Narina Trogon, and Tambourine Dove.
