Makulu Birders House

About the Accommodation

Makulu Birders House is located on the edge of the Dinokeng Nature Reserve and not too far from the increasingly popular Rust Der Winter Dam. More importantly, it is conveniently located for travelers to the province: It is only a short drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria and within close reach of many other famed Gauteng birding destinations. It offers self-catering accommodation for 10-12 guests and features a delightful porch etched into a pristine Indigenous garden, creating a setting perfect for birdwatching!

This 500-ha farm provides access to the Elands River, where birders can patrol the embankments in the hope of finding the inconspicuous yet dazzling Half-collared Kingfisher and the secretive African Finfoot.

The Makulu Birders House is located within the expansive WildsUitvlugt Game farm, just an hour’s drive from Pretoria. It features a vibrant garden with around 70 indigenous tree species that were largely absent from the farm before the garden’s establishment. The house accommodates 10-12 guests and offers self-catering facilities, along with a charming lapa and a lovely porch for leisurely birdwatching in the garden. Here, you can observe an array of flycatchers, sunbirds, shrikes, and woodpeckers, among others. At night, the calls of various nightjars and owls can be heard, serenading birders into a heightened state of bushveld euphoria.

Birders will have full access to the entire farm and can explore this magnificent property either by hiking, driving, or joining organized, pre-arranged game drives. Additionally, there is a smaller area for birders to explore nearer to the Elands River, where the elusive African Finfoot has been sighted. The property has a bird list of over 245 species and is rapidly growing!

Special highlights for the area include Grey-headed Kingfisher, Greater Painted Snipe, African Finfoot, Fairy Flycatcher (winter), Bushveld Pipit, Flappet Lark, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Half-collared Kingfisher, and Crimson-breasted Shrike.
