Limpokwena Nature Reserve

About the Accommodation

Limpokwena Nature Reserve is a pristine piece of land, a wonderful piece of wild Africa, where people dream dreams of joy, fulfillment and of conserving of all good things in nature. Above all it is a place where dreams come true.

The Reserve is situated in the north of Limpopo Province in South Africa at the confluence of the Mogalakwena River and the Limpopo River. It is close to Mapungubwe National Park and falls within what is known as the Mapungubwe Golden Mile, which incorporates sites of historical significance of the movement of previous tribes throughout the area, containing old artefacts and rock paintings. Clay pot remnants and other artefacts from a previous lifetime were found at Limpokwena Nature Reserve. The land was registered in 1870 as the farm “Bivack”, (derived from “Bivouac” – to take shelter often temporarily”). The history of this nature reserve lives on through old farming infrastructure and Baobab trees scratched with initials and dates from the late 1800’s.

1. Main Lodge Chalets
There are 4 separate chalets scattered throughout the lodge grounds, offering secluded privacy. 3 of the chalets are equipped with a Queen bed, and 1 chalet consists of 2 single beds. The chalets are serviced by a larger separate main lodge area.

The chalets can be booked on either a full board basis or a self-catering basis. Game drives are included in these accommodation options and are inclusive of either tea/coffee for morning drives, or an Amarula sundowner for afternoon drives.

2. Family Cottage
This sweet little cottage set on the edge of the lodge grounds offers our guests privacy and comfort for groups and families of up to 6 people. The cottage is fully equipped and consists of 2 downstairs bedrooms. Upstairs is an open loft with an additional 2 single beds. Outside is a private barbecue facility and a view overlooking the surrounding wilderness. Elephants often make an appearance in the evenings and the birdlife is also very entertaining right on your doorstep.

3. Island Camp
The Island Camp is an exclusive rustic tented camp set on an Island in the Limpopo River. The perfect spot to unwind and take in the rare surrounding wilderness. Grab a book & a drink, and settle in for a relaxing blissful time in the wild! The Island Camp is open and unfenced and lies between the border of South Africa and Botswana. It is open to the Thuli Game Reserve and allows for various game species to move through the camp. Elephants, hippos, and hyenas are regular visitors, and there are also plenty of crocodiles in the surrounding pools of water. For this reason, we recommend only experienced campers and unfortunately do not permit children under the age of 12 years. We do not permit walking from the camp, as the chances of encountering elephants are very high.

There are 4 stands that accommodate a total of 8 guests in 4 tents. The Island Camp is booked on an exclusive use basis, so you will have the camp to yourself.
