In Toto Retreat Garden Route is a solar-powered contemporary four-star six-bedroom guesthouse located on the shores of the Swartvlei lagoon, in The Island Conservancy of Sedgefield, on the Garden Route between Knysna and George. The Swartvlei suite offers 180-degree views over the Swartvlei Lagoon. Watch Herons, Cormorants and Egrets jostling for space on towering gum trees from the Goliath Heron Suite. The Seahorse suite named after the Knysna Seahorses found in the Swartvlei Lagoon overlooks the pool area. The Strelizia Suite, a fully self-catering unit, celebrates the bird of paradise plants on The Island. The Yellowwood Suite pays homage to the giant indigenous forests of the area, while the Outeniqua Room is a nod to the mountains and the first inhabitants of the site.

The Swartvlei Lagoon is home to a great variety of birds. Take our canoes and explore the shores of the Swartvlei that are home to African Fish Eagles, Goliath, Grey and purple Herons, various Egrets, cormorants, red knobbed coots, the Little Grebe and the Great Crested Grebe to mention a few. Our gardens have a beautiful array of sunbirds, Cape Whiteye and many other garden species. Take a stroll along Swartvlei Beach to the iconic Gericke’s Point, the Sphynx of the Garden Route, and marvel at the breeding pairs of Block Oyster Catchers, the Hartlaub or Cape Gull. You may get lucky and spot Spoonbills, or flamingo at the Rondevlei or Malachite Bird Hides located in the Garden Route National Park, a mere 10 km from In Toto. Take a hike through the Goukamma Nature Reserve, pass the iconic Groenvlei and Platbank, and spot a beautiful Knysna Turaco, Giant Kingfisher or Malachite Kingfisher.
