About the Birding:
At Gartmore Guest Farm the birding is both special and significant. Special for the list of lifers you may find, and significant for the long history it has had in the conservation efforts to preserve and protect the rich biodiversity of the Karkloof, primarily through the formation of the Karkloof Conservancy. The Karkloof Conservation Centre is located at the entrance to Gartmore Farm and a large diversity of birdlife abounds on the farm where agriculture is practised in harmony with birds, wildlife and the frog and insect life. The rivers, wetlands and flood plains of the Yarrow and Karkloof rivers located on the farm, create an ideal habitat for water birds and is one of the few places where one can sit and watch all three species of Cranes found in South Africa (Wattled Crane, Blue Crane and Grey Crowned Crane). Time spent in the well-equipped bird hides, or on your own walks around the farm may get you connected with some notable species including Southern Bald Ibis, African Spoonbill, Buff-spotted and Red-chested Flufftail, Black-winged Lapwing, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, African Fish-Eagle, Denham’s Bustard, Secretary Bird, Southern Ground-Hornbill, Lesser Moorhen, Baillon’s Crake and in wetter years, Lesser Jacana.
