BirdLife Sandton has been in existence for 35 years+ now (1982) and we welcome all members from the experienced birders to the less so!

BirdLife Sandton is affiliated to BirdLife South Africa.

Sandton Bird Club was started in 1987. In 2005, the Club changed its name to Birdlife Sandton, or BLS, because of our affiliation with Birdlife South Africa.

The Club is small and friendly. We have about 100 members, approximately 60% of whom are active. We welcome birders of any standard, from experienced to newbies. The best way of improving one’s birding is to go out with others and learn from the experienced outing leaders and other more experienced birders.

We have six meetings a year. The meeting format is some time to socialise, followed by a light supper and a specialist speaker. We serve wine and soft drinks at meetings. Entrance is free to members. Visitors pay R100pp. Our venue is The Vintage Club, Bryanston Village, 76 Homestead Avenue, Bryanston. There is plenty of safe parking. Meetings begin at 6pm and wrap up around 9pm.

We have at least one morning outing a month, sometimes two. We try to keep the outings to venues within easy reach of the northern suburbs. An experienced guide usually leads outings. There is an outing fee charged to cover the cost of the guide; the amount varies, but it is generally around R100pp.

Occasionally, we organise weekend outings to venues further afield, usually from Friday to Monday. The cost varies depending on the venue.

You do not have to be a member of Birdlife South Africa, but we would encourage you to join. Membership affords many opportunities and benefits, but, most importantly, it keeps members abreast of all local conservation efforts. There is also an optional subscription to the award-winning, glossy publication African Birdlife, which comes out bi-monthly. The subscription fees vary, but can be found at www.birdlife.org.za.

You will also be added to the Club mailing list, which provides frequent electronic communication on Club activities, other matters and items of general interest.

The Club provides a forum for discussion, learning, friendship, socialising, participation and contribution with like-minded people around a common interest.

Our membership fee is R300 pp per annum. We look forward to welcoming you!
