Founded in May 1995, BirdLife Plettenberg Bay has grown into a dynamic community of over 400 members who share a passion for birds, nature, and conservation. For nearly three decades, the club has been a hub where birding enthusiasts of all levels come together to learn, explore, and make a real difference.

Members enjoy a variety of exciting activities throughout the year:

Monthly dinner evenings with inspiring talks on birds and conservation.
Monthly bird counts in the field (teamed up for fun and learning), rounded off with a relaxed social gathering.
An Annual ‘Away’ Trip to explore a top birding destination beyond Plett.
Regular local outings that uncover the avian treasures of the Garden Route.
Bi-annual Coordinated Waterbird Counts (CWAC) with data collected and submitted to Cape Nature and the second South African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP2).
Festive year-end celebrations and the Annual AGM, where friendships and shared memories take centre stage.

But being part of BirdLife Plettenberg Bay isn’t just about enjoying the birds — it’s also about giving back. All membership fees and donations are channelled directly into local conservation and education initiatives, including:

The Birding Connect programme with Nature’s Valley Trust, introduces students to the wonders of birding.
The #SharetheShores initiative with Conserve Eden, protecting vulnerable shorebirds like the White-fronted Plover and African Black Oystercatcher.
Support for organisations that rescue and rehabilitate stranded or injured birds.
Ongoing bird ringing and monitoring projects in collaboration with Conserve Eden, ensuring long-term conservation success.

To keep everyone inspired and connected, the club also produces newsletters filled with news, trip reports, and fascinating insights from the field.
