About the Accommodation

Antares is a small exclusive self-catering bush camp situated in the Grietjie region of the Balule Nature Reserve. Ian and Mel Owtram own and manage the camp and are always ready to welcome our guests to our small piece of paradise and offer you an experience you will hopefully talk about for years to come. In fact, we are convinced that you will enjoy it so much that the Umgede Hide will keep bringing you back as regular repeat guests.

The reserve is open to the Greater Kruger National Park and as such we have the Big 5 roaming free as well as many other species of general game. Our bird list is in the region of 350 species and many of these can be photographed from inside the underground hide. Look out for our resident nesting hornbills and African Barred Owlets inside the camp gardens.

The camp has 10 beds in 4 bedrooms all with en-suite facilities and an additional outside shower in each bathroom. The bedrooms are all air-conditioned and have comfortable beds and décor that has been produced by various members of the family.

A deck leads you through to the main building where there is a spacious kitchen including a 5-plate gas hob and electric oven, ample fridge space and all the usual cutlery and crockery you will require. The lounge and dining areas are well lit with beautiful lamps shades and soft LED lighting and decorated with leadwood trees and a curiosity table with local artefacts which add to the ambience.

Leading off the lounge are two decks where you can relax above the small plunge pool or eat dinner outside while watching game come down to drink at the waterhole a few meters away.

A visit to Antares would not be possible without stepping inside the underground Umgede Hide where you can sit in comfortable director’s chairs and photograph the game from ground level while they quench their thirst. Thirsty elephants drinking just inches from the shutters (those on the hide as well as your cameras!) will enchant you and leave you with lasting memories of your stay.
