About the Birding

Enjoying full exclusivity of the reserve, low vehicle density and wide-open spaces makes for a tranquil escape for man, bird and beast alike. Offering such diverse environments, Abelana Game Reserve supports a variety of birds, with over 230 species identified within its first two years of operation as a conservation reserve.

The list continues to grow and include river-favouring species such as Purple-crested turacos, Black-collared barbets, Saddle-billed storks and Fish eagles soaring overhead. The quiet waters of the Ramspruit Dam attract predatory birds, such as the rare Black-crowned night heron, Black-winged stilts, Woolly-necked storks and the iconic African spoonbill. Meanwhile, thick bushveld, mopane forests and rocky outcrops are home to Verreaux’s eagle, African cuckoo hawk, Capped wheaters, Broad-billed rollers, Southern white-faced owls, Dwarf bitterns and the delightful honeyguide.

With over 200 species to seek out in this sublime birding paradise, it’s only right that nature’s most flamboyant performances of song and flitting dances be enjoyed from the luxurious comfort of Abelana River Lodge.
