Set within the rich floodplains of the Pienaars River, Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary and Lodge stands out as one of Limpopo province’s most dependable and rewarding birding destinations and a proud, celebrated BirdLife South Africa Recommended Member. Recognized as the country’s top birding accommodation in the inaugural ‘Birding Life Awards’, it has certainly earned its place as a firm favourite among the birding community, and rightfully so.

But what makes it so special? Positioned at the meeting point of woodland, wetland, and open savanna, the broader Kgomo-Kgomo floodplain system has produced an impressive and diverse list of over 430 species of birds, including some national and regional rarities. It’s a landscape that delivers—season after season.

Birding here is as much about consistency as it is about variety. Conditions shift with the seasons, but there is always something to be found, whether you’re scanning the vast, open floodplains, actively birding the roadside thickets along well-known Zaagkuilsdrift Road, or exploring the lodge’s own carefully maintained microhabitats. For those willing to slow down and look closely, the rewards can be exceptional, and the opportunities endless.

The lodge itself is designed with birders in mind. A network of hides and accessible viewing areas encourages slow, immersive birding, while the surrounding bushveld can be explored at your own pace—on foot or by vehicle—making for a flexible and deeply engaging experience.

Accommodation

The lodge’s accommodation is perfectly suited to a birding stay, and guests can choose between well-appointed lodge rooms or campsites set within the surrounding bushveld. Since having changed ownership some years ago already, concerted effort has gone into making the rooms spacious, clean, and practical—ideal for recharging one’s batteries between sessions spent enjoying birding in the field.

Did we mention the ‘lifer bell’ that birders can ring when returning to the lodge, if having successfully seen a new lifer?

One of the real advantages here is how easily birding fits into your stay. Hides and key viewing areas are within easy walking distance, allowing you to move seamlessly between rest and observation without needing to travel far.

The lodge sits in a quiet, natural setting where bird activity is ever-present, ebbing and flowing with the seasons. During summer, when rains can transform the floodplain, a 4×4 vehicle may be necessary to access certain areas, but these challenging conditions often bring with them some of the most rewarding birding.

General Information

Despite the sense of remoteness that envelops its guests shortly after arrival, Zaagkuilsdrift is conveniently located within easy reach of Gauteng province, with straightforward access from both O.R. Tambo International Airport and Lanseria International Airport, making it an ideal ‘base’, starting point, or stopover for a dedicated birding getaway.

While birding is undoubtedly the main drawcard, the area supports a healthy bushveld ecosystem, with regular sightings of plains game adding to the experience. This is a working conservation landscape, where ongoing habitat management is being undertaken by the Zaagkuilsdrift team, helping maintain the integrity of both the floodplain and surrounding bushveld, whilst supporting local communities.

Directions

Zaagkuilsdrift is an easy drive from Pretoria. Head north on the N1 towards Polokwane, take the Pienaarsrivier/Bela-Bela (R101) turn-off, and follow the route through Pienaarsrivier onto the Zaagkuilsdrift Road. From there, it’s a scenic gravel drive through classic bushveld to the lodge, where warm smiles will be ready to greet you.

Day visitors are invited to experience the rich birdlife and tranquil bushveld setting of Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary and Lodge. The lodge’s relaxing grounds and the incredible access that it provides birders to the extremely productive Kgomo-Kgomo floodplain system make for a rewarding day’s birding, all within easy reach of Pretoria and Johannesburg.

When available, the on-site restaurant provides a convenient opportunity to enjoy a meal or refreshment between birding sessions.

  • Access hours: 09:00–17:00
  • Open daily: 1 October – 30 April
  • Open weekends only: 1 May – 30 September
  • No pets allowed

Day visitors are free to explore the sanctuary and its birding areas; however, certain facilities, including the courtyard pool, braai area, and boma, are reserved exclusively for overnight guests.
