Vaal Bird Club
More about the bird club:
The club caters for birders in the Vaal Triangle and has a club evening on the second Monday of the month when a speaker is invited to give a presentation. The meetings start at 19h00. On the Saturday following the club meeting we organise an outing to venues in the vicinity but also further afield: Boschenvaal next to the Vaal River, Deelfontein in the Vredefort Dome, Marievale Bird Sanctuary, etc.
We organise a winter and a summer CWAC on the Vaal River every year, sponsored by Stonehaven on Vaal.
We also have weekend outings to places like Wakkerstroom and farms like Thwane Bush Camp in the Vredefort Dome.
The club was started in 1991 as the Vaal Birding Society and in 2012 changed its name to the Vaal Bird Club. The Raijmakers brothers, founder members of the club, have been ringing birds in the Vaal area and the rest of Southern Africa for more than 35 years. In December 2021 Kobie Raijmakers became the first South African to have ringed 50,000 birds in Southern Africa.
