Botriver Estuary at Middelvlei supports over 163 bird species, at least 62 are waterbirds. This Wetland supports an average of between 25,000 & 40,000 individual birds. Large numbers of ducks, which can exceed 20,000 individuals can be seen at the estuary. This is probably the largest regular congregation in South Africa. During summer, this wetland can support over 4,000 waders of at least 11 different species.
